How to choose the best lotion for your dog?

  • understand how it works: before purchasing anything in general it’s important to know how it works and how it’s going to be useful. How is the product you’re eyeing going to help your pet? How is it going to fix the problem? etc. are some questions to ask yourself.
  • read the ingredient’s list: not all ingredients are good for your pets. Some are really harmful, and you want to stay away from those when purchasing a product. In our case, we were looking for lotions with lavender in them. In general, you want to stay away from zinc oxide, lidocaine, diclofenac, hydrocortisone, and calcipotriene.
  • price and brand: you, of course, don’t want to go bankrupt, so checking the price of the product before buying is important. I’m not saying you should go for any cheap stuff out there because you don’t want to break your bank, but I’m saying while selecting make sure the product is worth the investment, and that it’s not going to cause more trouble instead of fixing things. The brand should be one that your trust.

The ideal way to go about purchasing a product you’re eyeing is to look for reviews about it. So here is our list!

  1. Dog Fashion Spa Dog Lotion for Coat & Skin – Rilassante (Chamomile & Lavender): best coat moisturizing lotion

Ok.. first of, if you’ve not heard of this brand, you’ve been missing out big time. I first came around to know it from a friend that swore just by it for the well-being of her dog. So I dug to find out what difference this product really made in her pet’s life and why was it that she was praising it.

Made in the U.S.A, this lotion was designed to gently moisturize your dog’s skin, condition its coat with essential nutrients. This product is available on Amazon and on the company’s website.

What we like:

  • great smell
  • great moisturizer
  • nongreasy/lightweight
  • relieve skin irritations/allergies
  • can be used on either dry or wet coat

What we don’t like:

  • 4oz only (that can be little depending on the size of your dog)
  • price (the product is not a cheap investment)

2. Pets Noni Lavender Lotion: best multi-pet use option

I have personally gotten to use the Noni brand on my skin, and I can say their product is just amazing. What surprised me is that the brand also had a line of products with the same benefits but for pets.

Made in Hawaii, this particular lotion can turn out to be your first to go first aid kit, and here’s why: it’s made with organic Noni fruits with all their medical qualities preserved, the lotion helps relieve the stiffness and pain that your aging furry animals feel in their joints and promotes relief from various skin irritations.

What we like:

  • made with 100% organic Noni pulp
  • enzymes preserved for highest potency
  • great for sensitive skin
  • long shelf life (2 years)
  • safe if ingested (not all products out there are)
  • comes in different sizes to cater to all budgets and needs (4, 8 & 12oz)

What we don’t like:

  • currently unavailable on Amazon but you can definitely add it to your list if you don’t want to purchase it from their site
  • notified by the FDA for false labeling and advertisement, read warning letter here

3. Aroma Paws-Calming Lavender Canine Massage Lotion: best massage oil option

Not like your regular daily lotions, but we ought to mention this wonderful product here.
Available on Amazon and their website, this massage lotion helps you nurture your canine companion’s skin and enjoy bonding times together. Definitely something to check out if you’re looking for something you can use daily.

What we like:

  • while massaging your dog, you get to spend time together bonding
  • nongreasy, so it easily absorbs
  • promotes circulation

What we don’t like:

  • funny unusual smell

 4. Quistel’s Lavender Dog Lotion Spray: best spray option

This British entry here stands out from our previous entries because it’s a spray lotion, a quick nice alternative to clean your pet without getting them wet according to their website.

What we like:

  • relieves from allergies/itchiness
  • great for sensitive skin
  • can be used anytime
  • smells great

What we don’t like:

  • comes in 2 small sizes (2 and 5oz)

5. Dog lotion: best handmade option

If like me you’re fond of handmade products, then this is definitely the lotion for your furry companion. It’s called Dog lotion and is available on Etsy, and is formulated with coconut and lavender oil only as ingredients in 2oz containers.  Works to reduce itchiness, irritations and calm nerves.

What we like:

  • handmade
  • natural ingredients

What we don’t like:

  • nothing 🙂

FAQ

Q. Why use a dog lotion?

A. Like you and I get affected by the changes in weather, in seasons, or by bacteria, so are our pets. Under that thick or thin layer of fur is a skin that can dry, that can flake, that can scale, that needs moisture. Not only does the skin needs it, so does the fur, the paws, and even the nose. Lotions just like shampoos should be part of our pets’ care products.

Q. Can I make my own lavender dog lotion at home?

A. Of course you can. You could use the recipe and steps here for that. Even though the recipe is originally for a lotion bar, you could modify it by adding less solid oil (beeswax, shea butter) in it, so it’s a bit liquid. Whatever recipe you decide to go for, just make sure the ingredients you use are safe for your little one.

Conclusion

Just like shampoos, lotions are important and essential for our dog’s overall health. It’s our responsibility as owners to take good care of our pets and make sure they and their skin/fur/paws/nails/nose/ears are in good condition.
